Daniel Bubeck

Hailed by both the New York Times and Opera News for his distinctive, honeyed timbre, smooth coloratura, secure technique and for his superb command of line and text, Daniel Bubeck has earned an international reputation on both the opera and concert stage in repertoire ranging from Baroque masters such as Bach and Handel to modern composers such as John Adams and Philipp Glass. He has performed in music festivals throughout North America, Europe, Asia and Australia with such esteemed organizations as the Théâtre Musical de Paris-Châtelet, English National Opera, New York City Opera, Hawaii Opera Theater, Spoleto and Adelaide Festivals, London Symphony Orchestra, Berlin Philharmonic, London Philharmonic, Tokyo Symphony, Moscow National Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, Boston Symphony, St. Louis Symphony, Radio Orchestras in Berlin and Holland, Royal Flemish Philharmonic, Estonian National Philharmonic, Vancouver Symphony, Concerto Köln and American Bach Soloists.  Conductors with whom he has enjoyed collaboration include Sir Simon Rattle, Gustavo Dudamel, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Vladimir Jurowski, Kent Nagano, David Robertson, Robert Spano, Markus Stenz, Christopher Hogwood and Nicholas McGegan.

Career highlights include the world premieres as well as almost all subsequent performances of the nativity and passion operas of American composer, John Adams: El Niño and The Gospel According to the Other Mary.  Mr. Bubeck is also a noted Handelian interpreting numerous roles including Giulio Cesare, Rinaldo, Solomon, Medoro (Orlando), Arsamene (Serse), David (Saul), Guido (Flavio) Armindo (Partenope), Tauride (Arianna in Creta), Didymus (Theodora) Israel in Egypt and Messiah.  Recent performances include Oberon in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream with Hawaii Opera Theater, the title role in Stradella’s San Giovanni Battista with Haymarket Baroque in Chicago and Johannes Passion with American Classical Orchestra.  

On recording Dr. Bubeck can heard on John Adams' The Gospel According to the Other Mary with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, (Deutsche Gramophone), Berlin Philharmonic, (Berliner Filharmonie) El Niño (Nonesuch CD /Art Haus Musik DVD), Vivaldi cantatas with Musica Sequenza (Deutsche Harmonia Mundi, Sony Music) and on the soundtrack of the Warner Brothers thriller, I Am Legend, music by James Newton Howard.

Upcoming engagements include performances of Cesti’s Orontea with Haymarket Baroque in Chicago, the world premiere and recording of Robert Moran’s Frammenti di un’opera barocca perduta and John Adams’ El Niño and Gospel According to the Other Mary with the Deutches Symphonie Orchester – Berlin, National Symphony Orchestra and The Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome.

A native of Wilmington, Delaware, Dr. Bubeck holds degrees in voice from Indiana University, Peabody Institute of Music and the University of Delaware.
